Joe Martin Skills Training Centre The History of the Name by David Morrison

Joe Martin passed away on May 9, 2013 in his 75th year with his family by his side. Joe touched the lives of so many with his laughter, his personal interest in people and his overall zest for life. Joe was also a highly respected business leader, spending 50 years in the Heavy Equipment industry. Starting his career as a mechanic in 1960, his determination and unparalleled dedication propelled him through a notable career in sales leadership. Joe's genuine ability to build relationships with everyone from the shop to the corner office has left its mark on countless people in his professional circles. Joe enjoyed the best years of his career serving as Vice President and General Manager, Central Division of Toronto CAT.

Days before Joe’s death, I had the opportunity to share with him our desire to honor him by naming this new skills training school the Martin Skills Centre. For years, Joe carried a dream to develop a school where African young people can learn skills that would equip them to stand on their own feet, providing skill sets to promote development of a nation, and sustainability for themselves and their families. Not only did Joe contribute significantly to the vision and development through planning meetings for this skills training school, but he set an example by working shoulder to shoulder on the ground with Malawians, passing on to them skills through his service maintaining the integrity of the infrastructure on the ministry base. Joe Martin’s vision will continue to bear fruit here in Malawi.

This underdeveloped nation desperately needs more young men and women trained in skills to help develop a more sustainable future for the nation.

Help us make it happen!
